Hyperpigmentation Treatment in Shreveport: Causes, Options, and What Actually Works

Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns we see in Shreveport, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. Louisiana sun, hormones, acne, and even skincare can all leave dark patches behind. The good news: most types respond well to a plan that is matched to the cause.

hyperpigmentation

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation means areas of skin that look darker than the skin around them, because the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) are making extra melanin in those spots. It is not harmful, but it can be frustrating and stubborn. For a general overview, see Cleveland Clinic’s guide to causes and treatment.

The main types

Type

What it looks like

Common trigger

Sun spots / age spots

Flat tan or brown spots on face, chest, hands

Cumulative sun exposure

Melasma

Larger, blotchy patches on cheeks, forehead, upper lip

Hormones plus sun and heat

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)

Dark marks after a pimple, rash, or injury

Inflammation

Not sure which one you have? Age spots, sun spots, and melasma can look similar, which is why the first step is an accurate assessment.

Why treatment starts with analysis

Treating the wrong type of pigment, or using something too aggressive, can make it darker. At Dixi’s MediSpa, we recommend starting with an Aura 3D Skin Analysis ($120), which images the skin to show sun damage and pigment below the surface. That lets us build a plan around what is really going on, not just what shows today.

Treatment options we offer

Chemical peels

We offer the VI Peel, BioRePeel, and TCA peel, from superficial to medium depth. VI Peel is listed for pigmentation, melasma, sun damage, and acne scars; BioRePeel exfoliates while stimulating collagen with little to no downtime. A series of 3 to 6 peels, about 4 weeks apart, is typical. The American Academy of Dermatology explains what to expect from a chemical peel. See the best chemical peel for dark spots for a deeper comparison.

Microneedling with Candela Exceed

Microneedling stimulates collagen and renewal. For pigmentation, we can add exosomes with tranexamic acid, which is designed to brighten skin and target hyperpigmentation such as melasma. Pricing: microneedling $350, with exosomes $525, with PDRN $595. The recommended protocol is 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Wondering if laser or microneedling is better for sun spots? Read microneedling vs. laser for sun spots.

HydraFacial with targeted boosters

A HydraFacial is not a pigment treatment on its own, but with targeted boosters it can support brightness between peels.

What actually works: the honest answer

1.           Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen. Without it, nothing else holds.

2.           A treatment plan, not a single session. Pigment responds over weeks, not days.

3.           The right strength for your skin tone. Deeper skin tones need a careful, gradual approach to avoid rebound pigment. The AAD has specific advice on fading dark spots in darker skin tones.

4.           Patience and consistency. Most plans run several months, with maintenance afterward.

What to avoid

•            Picking or scrubbing dark marks

•            Skipping sunscreen during treatment

•            DIY bleaching products or aggressive acids without guidance

•            Treating melasma like sun spots (melasma can flare with heat and inflammation)

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to fade dark spots?

Expect visible change over several weeks, with the best results after a full series of treatments.

Can melasma be cured?

Melasma is usually managed rather than cured. See our full melasma guide.

Are peels safe for darker skin tones?

With the right peel and strength, yes. Your provider will assess your skin first.

Do I need to stop treatment in summer?

Not necessarily, but sun protection becomes essential and your provider may adjust the plan. The AAD explains how to select a sunscreen.
