If your makeup sits on your skin instead of in it, or your skincare feels like it’s not absorbing, dermaplaning may be the missing step. It’s a quick, no-downtime exfoliation that leaves skin smoother, brighter, and more ready for everything you put on it.

dermaplaning

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation performed with a sterile, medical-grade blade. Your provider gently glides the blade across the skin at an angle to remove the top layer of dead skin cells along with fine vellus hair, also called peach fuzz. Cleveland Clinic offers a neutral overview of benefits and side effects.

What happens during the treatment

1.           Cleansing to remove oil, dirt, and impurities.

2.           Exfoliation with the sterile blade.

3.           Calming and hydrating serums.

4.           Moisturizer and sunscreen to finish.

The session takes about 30 to 45 minutes. The sensation is a light scraping, described as gentle.

Benefits of dermaplaning

•            Smoother, brighter skin and less dullness

•            Refined texture and a softer look of fine lines

•            Removal of peach fuzz

•            Better absorption of skincare products

•            A smoother base for makeup

•            Helps clear dead skin from pores, which may help prevent future breakouts.

Dermaplaning myths

“My hair will grow back thicker and darker.” It won’t. Hair returns as it was.

“It’s the same as shaving.” Not quite: it uses a sterile medical-grade blade, with technique and skin prep that make it a true exfoliation treatment.

“It will make my skin sensitive for days.” Most clients see mild pinkness for an hour or two. Skin is more sun-sensitive afterward, so SPF matters.

Who should get dermaplaning?

Good candidates include people with:

•            Dry or rough skin

•            Dullness and fine lines

•            Peach fuzz that catches makeup

•            A need for gentle exfoliation without harsh peel chemicals, including some pregnant or nursing clients (always confirm with your provider).

Who should skip it

•            Active inflammatory or cystic acne: wait until breakouts clear

•            Rosacea or very sensitive skin conditions

How often should you get dermaplaning?

Every 4 weeks, matching your skin’s roughly 28-day renewal cycle. You can stop at any time with no lasting effects.

How long does dermaplaning last?

The smooth, bright finish from dermaplaning usually lasts about 3 to 4 weeks, which matches your skin's natural renewal cycle. Peach fuzz grows back at the same rate and texture as before; it does not grow back thicker or darker.

Dermaplaning for dry skin

Dry, flaky skin often benefits the most, because removing the buildup of dead cells lets moisturizers and serums absorb better. We follow every treatment with hydration so your skin feels soft, not tight.

How much does dermaplaning cost?

Dermaplaning at Dixi’s MediSpa is $80. We also recommend pairing it with a HydraFacial Syndeo in a single visit, which we call the Power Duo: removing dead skin and fuzz first helps the HydraFacial serums, including antioxidants and hyaluronic acid, penetrate more effectively. Aftercare

•            Use SPF daily and avoid prolonged sun (the AAD explains how to select a sunscreen)

•            You can wear makeup right away, though we often suggest waiting until the next morning

•            Keep skin hydrated and avoid harsh actives for a day or two.

Frequently asked questions

Does dermaplaning hurt? No. It feels like light scraping.

Is there downtime? None. You can resume normal activity right away.

Does dermaplaning help acne scars? It helps surface texture. For scars, we often recommend microneedling. The AAD explains how microneedling can fade scars.

Can I dermaplane at home? Home tools aren’t medical-grade and technique matters. Professional treatment is more controlled.

Do dermatologists recommend dermaplaning?

Many dermatologists consider professional dermaplaning a safe, gentle form of exfoliation for most skin types. It is not recommended over active acne, open wounds or certain skin conditions, which is why we check your skin first.

Does hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?

No. Dermaplaning cuts the fine vellus hair at the surface; it does not change the follicle, so hair grows back with the same texture and color.
