Dr. Pen vs. Professional Microneedling: What’s the Difference?

Oct 10
3 min read

A motorized microneedling pen looks a lot like what a provider uses, and it costs a fraction of one treatment. So why pay for professional microneedling? The answer is less about the needles and more about what surrounds them: depth control, hygiene, skin assessment, and what goes on your skin afterward.

What is a Dr. Pen?

A Dr. Pen is a handheld, motorized microneedling pen of the kind widely sold online. The FDA has cleared some pen-shaped, motorized microneedling devices for use by trained providers, but says it has not authorized any microneedling medical device for over-the-counter sale. Cartridges hold fine needles and the pen’s length setting controls how far they extend. Many people buy one to treat texture, scars, or stretch marks at home.

What is professional microneedling at Dixi’s MediSpa?

We use the Candela Exceed™, a medical microneedling system that allows your provider to adjust treatment depth and speed by skin type and area. A trained provider screens your skin, picks the settings, treats the area, and applies the right products afterward. Cleveland Clinic’s patient guide covers what the procedure involves, and the AAD makes a similar point in its piece on microneedling: experienced hands can improve the face.

Where at-home pens go wrong

•            Depth guesswork. Too shallow does little; too deep can scar, especially in thin-skin areas.

•            Infection risk. Needles break the skin barrier, so hygiene is not optional. The FDA lists bleeding, bruising, and infection among the risks of microneedling devices.

•            Wrong products. Putting actives or irritants on freshly needled skin can inflame it.

•            Wrong skin. Active acne, rosacea, infections, or certain pigment conditions can get worse.

•            No plan. Texture, scars, and pigment need different protocols.

What professional treatment adds

Options matched to your goal.

•            Classic microneedling, $350: texture, pores, fine lines, scars.

•            With exosomes, $525: advanced anti-aging, healing, and collagen support. With tranexamic acid, designed to brighten pigment such as melasma.

•            With PDRN, $595: skin renewal, dullness, and elasticity.

A protocol. The recommended series is 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, with a session taking about 60 to 90 minutes.

Recovery guidance. A slight pink glow, like a mild sunburn, usually fades by the next day, and you avoid makeup for 48 hours.

Is a Dr. Pen ever a reasonable choice?

If you do use one, keep it to healthy skin, use new sterile cartridges every time, keep the setting conservative, and stop at the first sign of irritation or infection. It is not a replacement for a medical treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dr. Pen the same as professional microneedling? No. Both use needles, but professional treatment adds assessment, controlled settings, sterile conditions, and aftercare.

Can I use a Dr. Pen on acne scars? Scars need appropriate depth and a plan. A provider can tell you what’s realistic. See the AAD on how microneedling can fade scars.

How much is professional microneedling? $350 for classic, $525 with exosomes, $595 with PDRN. See the full cost guide.

Does professional microneedling hurt? Numbing is applied first. Most people feel pressure and vibration.
