Microneedling is one of the most versatile skin treatments in a med spa: it can improve texture, fine lines, enlarged pores, acne scars, and overall skin quality. This guide answers the questions we hear most: what it costs, how many sessions you need, what recovery looks like, and what results are realistic.

Microneedling Results, Cost, Downtime, and How Many Sessions You Need

What is microneedling?

Microneedling uses fine needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the skin. The skin responds by building new collagen and elastin, which is why texture and firmness improve over time. At Dixi’s MediSpa we use the Candela Exceed™, a medical microneedling system with adjustable depth and speed so treatment can be matched to each skin type and area. Read more about why we chose it in our Candela Exceed microneedling guide. For a neutral overview of the procedure, see Cleveland Clinic’s patient guide.

What does microneedling treat?

•            Fine lines and early wrinkles

•            Acne scars

•            Enlarged pores

•            Uneven texture and dullness

•            Overall skin rejuvenation and elasticity

•            Pigmentation such as melasma, when combined with the right topical (see exosomes below)

The American Academy of Dermatology describes how microneedling can fade scars and uneven skin tone.

What are exosomes and PDRN? Exosomes support skin repair and healing and are applied during and after the procedure. Exosomes paired with tranexamic acid are designed to brighten skin and target hyperpigmentation such as melasma. PDRN is a regenerative option aimed at skin renewal, fine lines, dullness, and elasticity.

How many sessions do you need?

Some clients notice a difference after one treatment, but the recommended protocol is a series of 3 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Collagen builds gradually, so the best results usually show in the weeks and months after the series. Wondering about maintenance? See how often you should get microneedling.

What happens during a session?

A session takes about 60 to 90 minutes including prep. Your provider cleanses the skin, applies numbing, treats the area with the Exceed, and finishes with soothing products and sun protection.

Downtime and recovery

•            Right after: a slight pink glow, similar to a mild sunburn, that typically fades by the next day.

•            First 48 hours: avoid makeup so the micro-channels can close, and avoid heavy sweating.

•            First days: skin may feel tight or dry. Use gentle hydration and daily sunscreen (the AAD explains how to select a sunscreen).

Who should not get microneedling?

Microneedling is not recommended over active infections, open lesions, or active acne flares in the treatment area, and it may not be suitable if you are pregnant or have certain skin conditions. Your provider screens for this at consultation.

Microneedling vs. other treatments

•            vs. chemical peels: peels resurface the top layers; microneedling works on collagen. Many plans combine both. See chemical peels.

•            vs. derma rolling at home: see microneedling vs. derma rolling. The FDA explains the benefits, risks, and safety of microneedling devices.

•            vs. plasma pen: the plasma pen is for tightening and deeper laxity; see fibroblast plasma lift.

Frequently asked questions

Does microneedling hurt? Numbing is applied first. Most people feel pressure and vibration.

When will I see results? Some glow appears within days. Collagen-driven results build over weeks.

Can I do microneedling in summer? Yes, with strict sun protection. Your provider will advise.

Is microneedling safe for darker skin tones? With adjustable depth and the right protocol, it is commonly used across skin tones. Your provider will assess your skin first.
