Types of Facials Explained: Which One Does Your Skin Actually Need?
Walk into any spa and you’ll see a long facial menu. The truth is that most facials do one of four things: cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate, or stimulate renewal. The right choice depends on your skin and your goal. This guide explains the main facial types and which concerns each one fits best.

The main types of facials
Classic spa facial
Cleansing, steam, manual extractions, a mask, and massage. It’s relaxing and good for basic care, but results are mostly surface-level. See HydraFacial vs. traditional spa facials.
HydraFacial
A multi-step treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts, and infuses hydrating serums using vortex suction, with no downtime. At Dixi’s MediSpa, HydraFacial ranges from $200 to $380. Cleveland Clinic describes how this exfoliate, extract, and infuse approach works in similar facials. Learn more in What Is a HydraFacial?.
Dermaplaning
Gentle exfoliation with a sterile blade that removes dead skin and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). It’s $80 at Dixi’s MediSpa and is often paired with a HydraFacial. Read Dermaplaning: What It Is and How Often, or see Cleveland Clinic’s guide to its benefits and side effects.
Chemical peels
Solutions that exfoliate from the surface to medium depth to improve tone, texture, pigmentation, and acne scars. We offer VI Peel, BioRePeel, and TCA peels. See chemical peels. The American Academy of Dermatology explains what to expect from a chemical peel.
Microneedling
A collagen-induction treatment for texture, pores, fine lines, and acne scars, performed with the Candela Exceed. See the microneedling guide, or Cleveland Clinic’s patient overview.
Laser Glow Facial and acne laser treatment
Laser-based options for glow and for acne-prone skin. Ask for details at your consultation, or see Laser Glow Facial and acne laser treatment.
Men’s facial
Customized for thicker skin, shaving irritation, and ingrown hairs. See the men’s facial.
How often should you get a facial?
A good rule is every four to six weeks, which lines up with your skin’s renewal cycle. HydraFacial is recommended every 4 to 6 weeks, and dermaplaning every 4 weeks. Peels and microneedling are done in a series with more time between sessions.
Which facial to avoid when
• With a fresh sunburn or open sores
• During an active inflammatory acne flare (for dermaplaning)
• If you have rosacea or very reactive skin: tell your provider first
How to combine facials without overdoing it
Combining treatments in one visit can work well: for example, dermaplaning before a HydraFacial helps serums absorb. Stacking multiple strong treatments at once can irritate skin, so let your provider plan the sequence.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best facial for glowing skin? A HydraFacial gives an immediate glow with no downtime.
What is the best facial for acne scars? Microneedling is a common choice, sometimes combined with peels.
Which facial is best for sensitive skin? A customized HydraFacial or dermaplaning for non-inflamed skin. Your provider will test your tolerance first.
Is a medical facial worth it? If you want results rather than relaxation, yes: medical-grade tools and products go deeper.
